how long does it take to become an esthetician

Thinking about pursuing an education in skincare? A common question you might want to get the answer to is "how long does it take to become an esthetician?" At Skinworks School of Advanced Skincare, the answer is that it depends on the schedule!
It's possible to complete one of our esthetician programs in as little as 18 weeks. Here's an overview of how long it takes based on our full-time or part-time programs:
- Daytime schedule – 20 weeks
- Evening schedule (Basic's Only) – 30 weeks
- Evenings & Saturday schedule – 28 weeks
This list only accounts for the time it takes to complete our basic program. Choosing our Comprehensive program that combines our Basic and Master Esthetics programs means it may take longer, but you'll be able to work toward licensure as a master esthetician and create more opportunities for your future career.
Master estheticians learn more advanced techniques, including certain plastic surgery techniques, radio frequency therapy, laser treatments, and more. This makes it possible to work in a wider variety of places, such as in a medical spa as a medical esthetician.
What Do You Learn in an Esthetician Program?
The state of Utah requires esthetics programs to be at least 600 clock hours, which means there's a lot to learn in that time!
As part of the Basic Esthetician program at Skinworks, our curriculum is split into theory and practical, which means you can learn a little bit of everything in a variety of ways. After all, we know everyone has a different learning style!
You also get variety in what you learn in our curriculum, as we have classes ranging from the history of esthetics to how to apply eyelash extensions. Here is the general overview of what you can learn at Skinworks School of Advanced Skincare:
- History of esthetics
- Signs of infection and how to treat it

What Is It Like at Skinworks School of Advanced Skincare?
Pursuing an education in skincare can be an exciting experience! While working toward finishing the 600 required hours, there's more than just bookwork and lectures.
A huge focus of our curriculum is to prepare future skincare professionals with the tools and knowledge they need to become licensed estheticians. They learn everything a licensed esthetician can do, plus put it into practice in our student spa.
All services are provided under the supervision of licensed professionals, which means our students get the feedback they need to provide good service while our guests are assured they can have a relaxing experience.
Next Steps After Completing Esthetician School
Once you've finished the appropriate esthetician program, the next step is to sit for the state board. This test is scheduled after your education, which means it may take a little longer to become a licensed professional than only 18 weeks, but it's still possible to become an esthetician in less than a year!
As part of the state board, you can expect to be tested on what you learned during school, with an emphasis on proper sanitation and spa safety in the professional workplace. We strive to help prepare our students for this exam as part of their education at Skinworks School of Advanced Skincare.
You can get all the details from start to finish in our guide to becoming an esthetician.
